<image:title>Virtual Reality - Muse of the Underworld: A Virtual Reality Opera</image:title>
<image:caption>Muse of the Lower World will be a short, virtual reality (VR) opera based on the half-woman, half-bird sirens of Greek mythology that were cursed to use their beautiful voices to lure sailors to their deaths. In our retelling of this myth, the siren laments her fate, and her inability to escape the cruel life to which she’s been cursed. On this day she pursues two sailors, but she’s challenged by one of them to show mercy. She considers the request, longing to be compassionate and take control of her destiny. She knows that this kindness will mean her death, but asks, “Will not this death, sweeten life, in these last breaths?”</image:caption>

<image:caption>This video shows some of the development process as we prepare for production. This project was a quarterfinalist in the inaugural XR Alliance 2018 competition, a distinction achieved by less than 5% of all submissions. A workshop performance was held on October 23, 2017 at Boston Court Performing Arts Center in Pasadena, CA. In December 2017 this project was chosen to be presented as part of Stereopsia, an international VR symposium (organized in collaboration with the Hollywood-based Advanced Imaging Society) held in Brussels in December 2017. The project was featured in Stereopsia's "3D Film Booster" program, which is designed to help independent producers to find financing and to reach their market and audience.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Virtual Reality - Muse of the Underworld</image:title>
<image:caption>Muse of the Underworld will be a short, virtual reality (VR) opera based on the half-woman, half-bird sirens of Greek mythology that used their beautiful voices to lure sailors to their deaths. In Greek mythology, the Sirens were seductresses who lured sailors with their enchanting voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island where they were cursed to spend their days upon the cliffs luring sailors to their death. In our retelling of this myth, the siren Thelxiope regrets her fate, and her inability to escape the cruel life to which she’s been cursed. On this day she pursues two sailors, but she’s challenged by one of them to find the beauty within herself and show mercy. She considers the request, longing to be compassionate and take control of her destiny. She knows that it will mean her death, but asks, “Will not this death, sweeten life, in these last breaths?” She answers by releasing her hold upon the men. In this VR work it is our intent to allow a full immersion into all aspects of the opera and switch perspectives throughout the story. The opera opens on the white, jagged cliffs that overlook the turquoise sea, where the siren lays in wait. When she intercepts the sailors a drone will capture siren’s point of view. A camera will be placed on the boat with the sailors as the siren flies overhead. When the younger sailor dives off the boat to go to the siren, an underwater camera will capture his plunge into the sea. These perspectives will create an adventurous experience for the viewer while also communicating a philosophical story of freewill through music and song. This project’s unique hybrid creature and the seaside atmosphere would be difficult to duplicate on a theater stage, but through the use of VR we can transport the audience into the world of the story. This combination of VR technology with classical opera has the potential to expand an audience’s understanding of both forms. For this opera, choosing a story that features a main character that communicates through song was intentional and uses the musical metaphor of a bird’s song throughout the score created by the musical composer Emer Kinsella.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Virtual Reality - Muse of the Underworld</image:title>
<image:caption>Muse of the Lower World will be a short, virtual reality (VR) opera based on the half-woman, half-bird sirens of Greek mythology that used their beautiful voices to lure sailors to their deaths. In Greek mythology, the Sirens were seductresses who lured sailors with their enchanting voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. Originally they had been maiden companions of the young goddess Persephone, but when Hades, god of the underworld, abducted Persephone, the sirens were given wings to search for her. When they were unsuccessful in finding her they were cursed to spend their days upon the cliffs luring sailors to their death. No man who heard the siren’s song could escape death, but in Homer’s The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, was so curious that he had his men tie him to the mast of their ship and then plug their own ears with wax so he could listen to their song. Sirens were fated to die if a man escaped their grasp, and after Odysseus passed by unharmed, the sirens flung themselves into the water and perished. In our retelling of this myth, the siren regrets her fate, and her inability to escape the cruel life to which she’s been cursed. On this day she pursues two sailors, but she’s challenged by one of them to find the beauty within herself and show mercy. She considers the request, longing to be compassionate and take control of her destiny. She knows that it will mean her death, but asks, “Will not this death, sweeten life, in these last breaths?” She answers by releasing her hold upon the men.</image:caption>
